Dermatology/Age Spots

At 152 Harley Street, our expert Consultant Dermatologists offer various highly effective treatments for age spots

As we become older, gradual changes in skin tone and texture accumulate to cause the physical signs of the ageing. Age spots, often known as liver spots, sometimes begin to appear in those over 40 years old. However they often do start to appear in younger people too. Age spot treatments are aimed at evening skin tone and rejuvenating the skin to combat the signs of ageing and enhance the appearance of the skin.

The natural ageing process is the main reason why they occur. However, this is hugely impacted by sun exposure and the changes in the colour of skin that occur as a reaction to this sunlight (and UV light) exposure. In general, this causes darkening of the the skin, redness and/or blotchiness that is results in an uneven skin tone. Sun exposure gradually accumulates in the skin from the time you are a child. As you age, your skin may start to show the effects of this exposure leading to collagen loss, and the skin becomes thinner, more fragile and an uneven skin tone develops with the formation of age spots and pigmentary change.

This is why it is vital to sun protect from an early age. Sun exposed individuals age at a faster rate than those that are not sun exposed and twin studies show that sun exposure may add 10 years or more to your appearance.

Genetics also play a part. If your parents or a close family member has age spots, then you will have directly inherited this condition.

However, at 152 Harley Street, our expert Consultant Dermatologists offer a variety of highly effective treatments to remove these signs of ageing including retinoid creams and other prescription topical creams, chemical peels & microdermabrasion, laser and intense pulsed light therapy and cryotherapy.

Skin Camouflage

Skin camouflage describes specialist products such as powders, lotions and creams which are effective to reduce the appearance of age spots. The products are formulated to be more waterproof and longer lasting than usual cosmetic products to effectively cover the age spots, reducing their appearance on the skin. At 152 Harley Street, we have an integrated specialist service of skin camouflage experts and aesthetic practitioners to assist your needs..

Retinoid Creams

Retinoid creams contain strong vitamin A derivatives that have anti-ageing, anti-acne, anti-pigmentation and exfoliating properties. Retinoid creams can help reduce the appearance of age spots because they reduce the amount of pigment in the superficial skin, leading to a lighter complexion and they can be helpful in reducing darker associated with age spots. Retinoids also stimulates collagen production which promotes and supports anti-ageing. Our team of consultants can advise you on the best prescription grade retinoids that can help you. Anti-pigmentation creams that contain retinoids can also help.

Chemical peels & Microdermabrasion

Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are alternative treatments for age spots. Chemical peels can reduce the skin tone of age spots by thinning the skin over them and removing a layer of dead skin cells and promoting the growth of new skin cells. They can improve skin tone and lighten the appearance of age spots.

Microdermabrasion involves gently removing the upper surface layer of dead skin cells with tiny crystals. This technique can be used on the face, neck, chest, back or hands. These dead cells are then vacuumed away leaving the skin with a brighter complexion, reducing the appearance of age spots.

Laser therapy & Cryotherapy

Laser therapy and cryotherapy are effective treatments for age spots. Laser treatments can be very effective to reduce the appearance of age spots without causing any damage to the skin surrounding the spot. We have the the ‘gold-standard’ of laser; the UltraPulse CO2 laser that can treat them in several different ways. We also have another laser that can be used to produce a “laser peel” that removes pigmented spots and evens skin tone.

Cryotherapy involves the use of extreme cold temperatures to destroy unwanted surface tissue. In terms of age spots, cryotherapy is used to remove the upper layers and therefore reduce the pigment in the age spots, having the effect of lightening them.

All of our treatments are effective methods to either remove or reduce the appearance of age spots, allowing you to feel comfortable and confident in your skin.
